MARCH is: Myths, what are they good for?

MONTHLY ASSEMBLY: At Ever’mans Co-op Education Center 350 W. Garden St. Pensacola, Saturday March 14th at 10:30am.

PRESENTATION:  MYTHS:  What are they good for?
What are they?  And the myths of Creation!

Myth, a symbolic narrative, usually of unknown origin and at least partly traditional, that ostensibly relates actual events and that is especially associated with religious belief. It is distinguished from symbolic behavior (cult, ritual) and symbolic places or objects (temples, icons). Myths are specific accounts of gods or superhuman beings involved in extraordinary events or circumstances in a time that is unspecified but which is understood as existing apart from ordinary human experience. The term mythology denotes both the study of myth and the body of myths belonging to a particular religious tradition. Encyclopedia Britannica.
Creationism is the belief that the universe and living organisms originate from specific acts of divine creation, as in the biblical account, rather than by natural processes such as evolution. There are other stories.

PRESIDENTS LETTER: From the Desk of the President.
Greetings! Humanists of West Florida.
We have been busy humans striving to be human kind. Here’s what we did in February: On February 5th, a group of us visited Open Books to help pack books for inmates of Florida’s prisons. We learned about the Prison Project, which is now in its 20th year. We had fun, snacked as we worked, and agreed to conduct this activity quarterly. Consider joining us on Wed, May 6th, 6 til 8 PM, 1060 North Guillemard. If any member wants to donate a snack tray to help feed the volunteers (12-15 people), call HWF at 850 366 3410.

Assembly in February was an action workshop of small groups who researched costs and submitted designs for HWF merchandise (t-shirts, yard signs, stadium cushions) for Earth Day (April 25th) and other upcoming festivals. One group focused on ideas for A Day of Quest, which if approved by the BOD will occur in August at a location, date, and time TBA. Oh, and we celebrated Charles Darwin at our annual Charlie Chili Cook Off. Kudos to the winners David Carroll winner and Laurie Webre runner-up. Mark your calendar for next year’s February assembly to take a selfie with Darwin and enjoy some awesome chilis.

February’s crowning jewel: On Wed, Feb 26th HWF planted 50 donated trees at Satoshi Forest Homeless Camp with the help of area businesses who dug holes and positioned the trees. We had media coverage… Woohoo… and the camp is now in compliance with local laws that require a natural barrier between the camp and its neighbors.

This month: Assembly topic is Myths.. What good are they? Sat, March 14, 1030 AM, Ever’mans Coop Education Bldg, 350 W Garden Street. Hope to see you there.

Upcoming events: April Assembly is Saturday the 11th. Earth Day celebration is Saturday, April 25th at Seville Square. Joint Spring Picnic with the Gulf Coast Freethinkers is planned for Sunday April 26th. Further details on April’s events will be posted when they become available.

Sincerely, Betty Myers, President

SATOSHI FOREST TREES:
What a great project to finally have done. Thank you so much to Panhandle Growers for donating $3000 of 50 trees, and Larry Downs Jr. Plmbg. for the backhoe tractor, and Dan Clark Excavating for the 36″ auger, and Buz Ryland, Mark Robinson, Vince Lauria, the shovelers, and Roy Skinner, Betty Myers, Sedona Strong, and Muffie Ryland for their spiritful support. Michael Kimberl is hugely grateful.

BAYVIEW CROSS UPDATE:
Below is a very good history of this legal challenge. What many people did not understand is that this case was about the Separation of Church and State, not the religion itself. We will not be appealing this because it is complicated. We won twice and lost once to the same panel of 4 judges that reversed themselves because their agenda was solved by SCOTUS in the Blandenburg Cross case that made it an historical “secular” symbol. Thus so is the Bayview Cross. It is now “secular” to all citizens to honor war dead. How’s that for getting around the Establishment Clause? And that is exactly what their agenda was. The reason we won’t be appealing is because their next agendist item is to remove “standing” from us to petition the government. The right wing agendist justices are looking for a national cases to undo “standing” by we citizens in all cases around the nation. They are emboldened by the current federal judiciary now fully swung to the right. We will not be apart of their plan which they exposed in the 42 page ruling on the Bayview Cross. They want to remove our “standing” and take it to the Supreme Court. It is in my opinion a gross attempt to change the first amendment right to petition.
These are the comments of case plaintiff Buz Ryland.

The HUMANIST MAGAZINE:

https://thehumanist.com/magazine/march-april-2020AHA Monthly THEME: Womens’ Rights
March focuses on women’s rights and the continued fight to protect them. Humanistic social justice advocacy involves respect for the equality of all people, compassion for their dignity and welfare, and a conviction that positive change requires human intervention. Women’s rights are human rights, meaning all genders have the right to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property and live is safe living quarters; to vote; to bodily autonomy; and to earn a fair and equal wage. Together we expand awareness and understanding of various forms of bigotry and foster compassion in our society.

The passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment was possible because local, state, and national organizations and activists fought together for change at every level of society and government. Today, local groups are banding together across the country to preserve local suffrage history and honor the ongoing work of women’s equality. Discover what is happening in your state for suffrage.Join FHA Social Justice Representative Program
As intersectional feminists, we value genuine, non-tokenized diversity in our communities, and over time, several AHA groups have sought assistance with social justice activism from the Feminist Humanist Alliance. That’s why, as part of their 2019 Action Plan, the FHA developed and began implementation of a social justice representative program to provide education, support, and an open line of communication around social justice issues. The program is in its pilot stages, being tested in a few larger locations, but the goal is to see widespread participation across the country’s AHA groups. If you’re interested in participating, or if your group is doing powerful social justice work you’d like to share, let them know at feministhumanists@americanhumanist.org.  ***The American Humanist Association is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable educational organization, as well is the Humanists of West Florida. Donations to the Humanists of West Florida , a chapter of the American Humanist Association, are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
